The Doctrine Of Jesus

THE DOCTRINE OF JESUS

by Bill Burkett

There have been many incorrect statements made regarding the importance of doctrine and the use of the word by conservative preachers. It has been openly resented as being divisive by the new evangelical philosophies. In just recent years the teaching came out of the Swedish Upsela school that “Jesus never used the word doctrine.” While I was in Europe preaching at the Sophia, Bulgaria Concert hall several young people ask me, “Why do you use the word doctrine if Jesus never used it.” Let us see if this statement that “Jesus never used the word doctrine” is true or another one of those radical teachings of the Charimsmatics that is taught as gospel when it is not.

1. Jesus DID use the word doctrine (didache) in John 7:16. He not only used the word doctrine (teaching) but spoke of doctrine as being “MY [Jesus’] doctrine” and that “MY doctrine” was the Father’s doctrine! So, Jesus used the word doctrine and then revealed God the Father as the source of “MY doctrine.” (See Biblical Fact No. 5 below.)

But, even if Jesus had never used the word doctrine in the Bible record of His life and sayings, it would still be very presumptuous to say He never used this word. The Bible does not record everything Jesus said. In fact, the Bible records very little of all He said. So if we do not have everything Jesus said, recorded in the Bible record, how can we say He never used a certain word. It is sometimes a temptation of immature Christians to find something they think conflicts with traditional teaching. It gives them the feeling that they have some kind of superior spiritual insight into the Word of God that many traditional pastors do not have. Usually it proves to be the very opposite. It is very unlikely that anyone today is going to come up with any “new” doctrine that our church Fathers did not discover over the last 20 centuries. Brilliant godly minds saturated with prayer and illuminated by the Holy Spirit poured over the pages of Scripture leaving their tears staining the sacred pages. It is wise not to advocate any doctrine contrary to what has been taught by the godly for centuries until you have had it checked out by the elders and studied it yourself in the Word of God.

2. First, we should point out that the word doctrine simply means “teaching” and is translated from the Greek word didache. Is the word doctrine a Biblical term, Yes. It was used all through the Bible. In the Greek Textus Recepticus, for example, it is found about 50 times and used to refer to pure doctrine the majority of times. It is found in 19 books of the Bible. It is used by 6 of the Old Testament writers and used in 13 of the New Testament epistles. It is used most frequently in Paul’s pastoral letters which stands to reason because he is teaching pure doctrine to Timothy who is circulating among the churches.

THE WORD DOCTRINE IN THE BIBLE
The word translated doctrine in our Bibles is the Greek word didache. It means, to teach or instruct. In fact, in Titus 1:9 the English Bible has the word didache translated as “taught.” So the word doctrine and teaching are very closely related. It is also equated with the words truth and information. You can use the words doctrine and teaching interchangeably in a sentence and never change the meaning of the sentence they are used in.

Doctrine is a supreme fact in the Christian experience. Why is it so important? Because we grow as Christians as we increase in knowledge. This is the whole meaning behind the word disciple (learner).(1 Corinthians 1:5; 15:34; 2 Corinthians 6:6; Ephesians 1:17, 4:13; Colossians 1:9-10; 3:10; 1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 1:3-5,8.)
