Keeping The Sacred Desk Sacred

Bill Burkett

There are certain periods of time in the churches history when we must take measures to preserve the purity of the church. We are living today in the end time of the church. The Word of God tells us that this is the time of the falling away and that there will be many false teachers circulating through the church with very powerful persuasions of doctrine. Let us consider just one of the many Scriptures that speak of this “perilous” time we live in;

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2 Timothy 4:3-4

To withdraw from a brother who has false teaching does not mean, of course that we are to be angry or mistreat him. To the contrary, we are to entreat him and make every effort to help him recover from his error.

A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself. Titus 3:10-11

And then if we have to reject him or excommunicate him from the church, even then we must pray for that one and leave the door open to him in the event he wants to discuss the problem.

The apostles teach that there are certain men we must not fellowship with and to associate with apostates in any way is to indicate to those who watch you that certainly allow to stand before the people as examples of Christianity when they look more like a Hollywood celebrity than the Christian life described in Scripture. To give them this exposure in your church will spread a wrong influence that will corrupt the church. Separation from those who have false doctrine is a command of the apostles to the church leaders.

In these modern times a strange thing is happening. We favor those who should be excommunicated from the church and treat the very enemies of Christ with smiles and kind words while showing bitterness and hatred toward those who love God and promote the Kingdom of God and His righteousness

Modern preachers are compromising every way possible to “keep our young people.” There is no different requirement for young people to enter the Kingdom of God than for adults. Pastor, keep you pulpit clean. Keep your message clean and do not compromise with the modern crowd.

Some of our brethren see so many opportunities for evangelism and want the money to evangelise so bad that they drop their interest in purity to accomplish their evangelistic vision. But no vision should exceed our vision of the purity of the church just at the time when Christ is coming to take away the bride who must be “without spot or blemish.”

That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:27

Evangelism without the doctrine of sanctification to offer your converts is like giving a hungry man a table laden with food with his hands tied behind him. Jesus first commanded Lazarus to COME FORTH.” THAT IS TO COME FORTH FROM DEATH UNTO LIFE, TO BE SAVED AND RAISED TO NEW LIFE IN CHRIST. But then after Lazarus came hopping out of the tomb alive, he was still bound by the grave clothes. Then Jesus gave a second command to those around Him, “LOOSE HIM”! THAT WAS THE SECOND WORK THAT MUST BE DONE BEFORE LAZARUS WAS TRULY FREE AND MADE COMTLELTELY RESTORED FROM DEATH. Even though Jesus raised him from the dead, he still had to be loosed after that resurrection!

If we get all excited about our freedom to evangelize and cast aside the supreme importance of building holy character and preserving the moral standards of the church, we will only create problems we will not be able to cope with.

Evangelical churches have a condition in them that orthodox churches do not have; The Orthodox churches are made up of people who have attended their churches for generations. But in the Pentecostal churches we have a constant stream of converts coming from the world, from sin and other religions. This flow of new converts must be received with strong teaching on the holy life and those doctrines of the Bible that will preserve them and keep them saved as Jesus taught us. IF WE DO NOT HAVE STRONG TEACHING MINISTRY ON THE HOLY LIFE WHERE THERE IS A LARGE INFLUX OF NEW CONVERTS, WORLDLINESS WILL OVERCOME THE CHURCH AS IT DID IN CORINTH AND OTHER OF THE EARLY CHURCHES. Read the seven mnessages which Jesus gave us in chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation – see there how that only two churches out of the 7 were without His condemnation. If we do not follow the instruction and examples given us in Scripture and “lean unto our own understanding,” we will throw the church into danger. Maybe not tomorrow or the next day – but ultimately, in months or a few short years we will reap what our foolsihness sowed.

Jesus came to create the church. Jesus loves the church, but He is also jealous and will remove candlesticks! (Revelation 2:5) This fact is one of the first warnings Jesus gives to the church in the revelation.

For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:2. -Paul

The modern gospel is a soft and easy gospel based on human interpretation of certain verses of the Bible. But to keep the church pure in these last days is not an easy task. But let us be assured that because a thing is difficult sometimes is because we are not praying and keeping the anointing on our lives. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 1 Timothy 3:12

The right way, and the way Jesus and the apostles did it by their example and then after doing it they said, “Now we have shown you how it is done and you now do the same.” (1 Corinthians 4:16; Philippians 3:17)

Where Keeping the Church Pure Begins
The purity of the church begins with the purity of the pulpit. The pastor or preacher who keeps his pulpit and his message clean will produce a clean church. If you at any time begin to show favor to some special group or person in the church and alter your message to please them rather than God, you have violated your calling to preach the gospel and represent God.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: (7) Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. (8) But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (9) As we said before, so say I now again, If any {man} preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. (10) For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. (11) But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. (12) For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. Galatians 1:6-12

I traveled to the Soviet Union for 25 years prior to the fall of Communism. I lived under the pressure of KGB surveillance and was arrested for the crime of being a Christian. I saw how you brethren stood under the persecutions and the prosecution of Communism. But now many of you who did not bow to persecution are compromising with the rich and worldly believers from the West. There are many of you who held up under Communism but you will bend and bow to materialism and worldliness.

Your faith was tried by the enemies of the church who were without, but now will you surrender to those enemies within the church? (Read Jude)

Scripture commands us to withdraw from disorderly brethren.

The church belongs to Christ. It must be governed and according to the Word of God and not according to the standards of human government(s) in which it exists.

Romans 16:17-18. Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. (18) For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

2 Thessalonians 3:6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition [teaching] which he received of us.

2 Thessalonians 3:14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

1 Timothy 3:5. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

1 Timothy 6:3-5 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; (4) He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, (5) Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

2 John 1:10-11 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: (11) For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
