First Epistle Of John

First Epistle of John

By Frank Pombo

WHY DID JOHN WRITE HIS FIRST EPISTLE?

That they Abhor Sin And Be Sinless! 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: John declared they must not commit (practice) sin and if they do, they are not Christians!

To Reestablish Traditional Teaching, Moral Law1 John 2:7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

The Love Commandment As Revelation Of Law 1 John 2:8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

To Assure Them Of Sins Forgiven 1 John 2:12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.

To Confirm the Fathers, Congratulate The Young Men And To Commend The Young 1 John 2:13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him {that is} from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

The Fathers For Keeping The Faith: The Young Men For Knowing The Word 1 John 2:14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

To Confirm Them In The Truth 1 John 2:21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

To Warn Them Against Apostates 1 John 2:26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

That They May Know If They Have Eternal Life 1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

GOD MANIFESTED

An Exposition Of 1 John 1 That which was from the beginning.

Here is John’s beginning: A reference to our link as a church with the past. The apostles experienced the person Christ in a real life first hand way. They walked with Him, ate with Him and listended to His voice as he spoke to them. Now he wants to link that personal experiemental relationship with the human Christ to the posterity of the church! …to all who follow unto the end of the church age! Is not this the primary reason of the Scriptural record, to leave with the church an account of the life of Christ as He happened! There is no question that John is leaving an accurate first hand account of His friendship with the Christ so that alll following generations of the church will have an inspired and truthful concept of Christ to distinguish between the facts as they are and the fancy of man’s imagination. Just think what would have happened to the gospel message if left merely to the hands of men to preserve rather than a clear record left behind by the men who knew Christ and recorded the events of His life and ministry! It is important to God that those principles of truth be recorded in canonized volume so there is preserved the original reference to our heritage.

WHAT WAS, IS! THE BEST WAY TO DETERMINE THE SPIRITUAL VALIDITY OF ANY PRESENT TEACHING IS TO COMPARE IT WITH THE ORIGINAL TEACHING OF THE APOSTLES DOCTRINE, INSPIRED BY GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; Three of the five imperial human senses are mentioned here (1.e., touch, taste, hear, smell, sight);

(1) “heard”, the sense of hearing. Probably mentioned first because hearing is the “FAITH SENSE” (Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.).

(2) “seen…looked upon” The sense of sight. More than merely noticing by seeing, but to “look upon”, to scrutinize at close range.

(3) “handled”. The sense of touch. A Manifested Christ – Jesus promised all believers that He and God the Father would manifest themselves to those who walk in obedience to the commandments of the Kingdom. (John 14:21-23). Christ was manifest in the flesh. He made manifest to man…and continues to manifest Himself to those who reach out to Him. God is manifested in nature. (Psalm 19; Romans 1:18-22). Manifestations of God are a vital part of faith! (See Genesis 45:27)

JOHN CONTRASTS TRUE AND FALSE BELIEVERS JOHN’S FIRST EPISTLE
Hereby know we that we are in him. John 2:5

TRUE CHRISTIANS LOVE THE COMMANDMENTS
2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. (5) But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected:

There should be a very special compatibility between the commandments of the Lord and the Christian. Those who hold fleshology doctrine believe that moral commandments and God’s love represent two different ideas or systems of religion. John quite simply states that God’s commandments (or His Word – he uses them interchangeably in verses 3 and 5) are kindred doctrines and that God’s commandments and God’s love are one.

John writes under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that God’s love and Christ’s commandments are not just compatible, they coexist in a perfect union! God’s love, God’s commandments and the true Christian enjoy full concord. They are all ONE!

It seems that John’s theology and the theology of many Modern preachers conflict. We are told by corrupted Bible teachers that “God’s law has been done away!” It would be better for those men in the judgement if they had never heard of Christ than to be teaching such heresy to the body of Christ.

To “keep His Word” implies that obedience to the commandments is expected performance for those walking in the Spirit. In fact, how can one walk in the Spirit if he is not walking in holiness of heart? To say we can continue in the sinful flesh after conversion and at the same time to “walk in the Spirit” is incomprehensible! It means that we are walking in the flesh and in the Spirit at the same time ?!?

On the authority of scripture it is impossible! For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Galatians 5:17

This Is What John Teaches About Christian Commitment To The Commandments;

THE FALSE ADORE CHRIST AND SLANDER HIS COMMANDMENTS
2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

FALSE CHRISTIANS HATE THE BRETHREN
2:9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 4:14-15 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not {his} brother abideth in death. (15) Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? See 3:11-18. Darkness, death, murder, damnation and hypocrisy (4:20) are all synonymous with not loving your brother!

THE TRUE LOVE THE BRETHREN
2:10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

THE FALSE LOVE THE WORLD
2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

FALSE BELIEVERS SEEK RAPPORT AND COMMUNICATION WITH WORLD
3:1b therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

THE FALSE SEPARATE FROM THE TRUE
2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. Apostates have left US, we did not leave them. Hold onto the beginning! See verse 2:24.

THE FALSE DENY CHRIST (HIS DEITY, ATONEMENT)
2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. There are many who believe in Christ but do not obey His Word showing commitment to His Lordship. To believe upon Christ results in a teacher/disciple relationship which involves discipline, obedience and sacrifice. False teachers avoid these subjects and in their place teach prosperity, a religious materialism, as the efficacy of the cross.

THE FALSE SEDUCE THE TRUE AND INNOCENT
2:26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. False teachers have this personal seducing charisma about them.

TRUE BELIEVERS HAVE KRISMA (ANOINTED TO KNOW TRUTH)
2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

THE TRUE BELIEVER BELIEVES IN RIGHTEOUSNESS
2:29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

TRUE BELIEVERS DO NOT PRACTICE SIN, BUT HATE SIN!
(4) Whosoever committee sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (5) And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. (6) Whosoever abideth in him sinneth Not; Note how John places the Christian under obligation to the moral law! (9) Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

FALSE BELIEVERS PRACTICE SIN
3:6b Whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

THE TRUE AND THE FALSE: JOHN’S CONCLUDING REMARK
3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

TRUE BELIEVERS OBEDIENT TO COMMANDMENTS; A DESIRE TO PLEASE HIM
3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

TRUE BELIEVERS KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS AND ABIDE IN HIM.
TRUE BELIEVERS HAVE A SPIRIT OF OBEDIENCE.
3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

TRUE BELIEVERS OVERCOME HERESY, APOSTATES, AND ANTICHRIST
4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

TRUE CHRISTIANS DO NOT GIVE CREDIBILITY TO PERSONALITIES
4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Notice how John links antichrist with “spirits” and “false prophets” – all are the same spirit!

TRUE CHRISTIANS ABIDE BY THE APOSTLE’S TEACHING
4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

TRUE BELIEVERS LOVE GOD, COMMANDMENTS, BRETHREN
5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. Not just God and the brethren, but God, the brethren and the commandments.

TRUE BELIEVERS HAVE A DIDACTIC FAITH!
5:3-4 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (4) For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. John, in a few words uses the words “love of God”, “commandments”, “overcometh the world” and “faith” as all being the same work of grace!

TRUE CHRISTIANS ARE DOCTRINALLY SOUND AND LEARNED
5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. John wrote to those “who believe on the Son of God…that ye may believe on the Son of God”. (?) John means that they may believe unto salvation! Same as Jesus who challenged those Jews “who believed on Him” Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; John 8:31

TRUE CHRISTIANS COMPREHEND THE IMPORTANCE OF HOLINESS
5:18-21 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; The born again hate sin and withdraw from it!

* He know it takes the initiative of the believer to appropriate grace! but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself. Who keeps him? He keeps HIMSELF. God provides grace but we must appropriate it and if we don’t, we self destruct.

* He knows that Satan cannot touch the children of God! The true Christian keeps himself disciplined! and that wicked one toucheth him not.

* He knows that he is of God! (19) And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

* He knows the world is Satanic and God’s worst enemy! (James 4:4) Knows Christ is come and why! To destroy the works of the Devil! (1 John 3:8) (20) And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

Know! know! know!…the Christian mind must be given to knowing the truth! to thinking! to using the head! (21) Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. The true Christian knows he must keep himself from becoming obsessioned with and admiring the things of the world!
