COMMANDMENTS

By Bill Burkett

The word that scares libertines and Charismatics out of their wits! God’s Word and especially the 1050 commandments in the New Testament (listed in Dake’s study Bible) serve us well. God’s commandments reveal to me what I need to know about God and how I can please Him. By the commandments I know what God is thinking about the issues of life. By the commandments of God I know directly from HIM what is right and wrong. If I had to find out all of the information God gives me in His commandments I would never learn a fraction of the wisdom contained in them in a lifetime. By the commandments I am given the secrets of peace and order making life much easier. The commandments show me the best path through life based on the wisdom of the living God. The commandments lay it all out for me so there is no guesswork. God’s moral law, using the ten commandments for starters, is a revelation of divine wisdom! Proverbs makes it so clear; But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death. These are the words of Lady Wisdom in Proverbs 8:36. When a man tries to live against the commandments he not only hurts the people around him, he brings hurt and damage to himself. The commandment is a cosmic absolute, a spiritual preventative that if followed saves us a lot of tears and pain … and in the end assures me a mansion in the kingdom of God! The first commandment every man should consider is, Ye must be born again. John 3:7. It’s the only way and that’s why it’s God’s commandment. All of God’s commandments are humane, not given as just arbitrary commandments but given for the good of man in this life and to guarantee eternal life in heaven. Jesus asked Paul, why do you kick against the pricks? trying to live against the wisdom of God’s commandments is to kick against the pricks and, oh boy, that smarts!! Smart people don’t do things that smart. Read Psalm 19.
